** UK nurse set for late month sentencing after throwing knife at paramedics attending on her husband

** Winnipeg politicians to do annual ridealongs with EMS, police, and fire?

UNITED KINGDOM NEWS

** Sentencing has been set for October 25th for a former Kirklees nurse who lobbed a knife at paramedics called to attend on her ailing husband. That is the word from The Examiner (October 4) which said Helen Garner, 50, flung the blade September 9 while providers were treating her spouse’s bleeding head wound. According to the newspaper, Garner let loose as the patient was being taken to the ambulance. The knife struck the EMS unit, then fell to the ground. Garner’s counsel said she was drunk and frustrated with caring for her schizophrenic husband. A pre-sentencing report has been ordered.

CANADA NEWS

** Winnipeg’s emergency services could have their hands full toadying to politicians, if one city councillor has her way. The Winnipeg Free Press (Bartley Kives/October 1) said Protection Committee chairwoman Paula Havixbeck (Charleswood-Tuxedo) has made a motion that all city council members do ridealongs with police, fire, and EMS at least once a year. Havixbeck, who said she found the undertaking illuminating, said Mayor Sam Katz should also join in. She said her time with EMS was especially interesting as it showed how often medics are detained waiting at hospitals.
