Obesity is pandemic. It permeates our playgrounds, schools, workplaces, and homes. The requirements of the bariatric population can no longer be thought of as ‘one offs’ by emergency providers or solely deferred to specialized teams when these patients are in need. Frontline caregivers must not only understand the unique anatomic and physiologic demands obesity superimposes on routine medical conditions, they must also attend to: the disease’s psychosocial effects; challenges in negotiating the physical environment when caring for patients; and, foremost, ensuring their own safety when taking these calls. Bariatric Emergency Medical Services (BEMS) is an authoritative manual for EMS providers who face these daily challenges. It is based on science, best practice, and over 30 years of experience in the field. BEMS concise text, thoughtful illustrations, and informative vignettes will provide new insights to novice and seasoned EMS personnel alike. Additionally, its focus on team dynamics and resource utilization will make BEMS a valuable resource for any party wishing to integrate a sophisticated bariatric unit into their emergency medical services program.
