** Virginia medic suspended, charged for allegedly stealing prescription pain pills

** Police in Las Vegas, Nevada have identified the man who jumped from an ambulance Wednesday. The Associated Press (March 22) said Steven Datu, 31, made the leap around 12:35 p.m. and was promptly struck by a GMC Sierra pickup truck and trailer. According to the newspaper, Datu sustained critical injuries in the mishap that saw him lodge beneath the wheels of the vehicle. An American Medical Response (AMR) spokesman said the ambulance was stopped at the side of the road when Datu left. There is no word on what his motivation for the escape was.

** A Virginia Beach, Virginia paramedic has been suspended after being accused of stealing medications. That is the word from the Virginian-Pilot (Veronica Gonzalez/March 22) which said Martha O. Hawkins, 53, has been charged with drug possession and stealing prescription pills. According to the newspaper, Hawkins allegedly took the prescription med Nycynta February 23. The drug contains tapentadol, a controlled substance. A preliminary hearing on the charges has been set for May 4.
