** South Carolina combat medic killed in Afghanistan

** Former Alaska US Navy medic likely to be charged with manslaughter in drug death of teen girl

** Military police in Afghanistan are investigating the death of a South Carolina combat medic killed December 27 in Paktia. The Maudlin Patch (Chris Winston/Jeff Brush/December 29) said Justin Whitmire, 20, died after the vehicle he was riding in was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED). According to the newspaper, the exact circustances surrounding the incident remain unclear. Whitmire joined the army last year and was deployed overseas three weeks prior to his death. He was stationed out of Fort Hood, Texas.

** A former US Navy medic, now residing in Alaska, is expected to be charged with manslaughter in relation to the death of a 14-year-old girl. Gantdaily (David Goodhue/AHN/December 30) said Sean Warner allegedly injected Jena Dolstad with a lethal dose of heroin December 22. According to the newspaper, Warner injected the girl at her behest. She was discovered the next morning after having vomitted and gone unconscious. She then began to convulse when Warner put Suboxone under her tongue. Following an autopsy, toxicology tests noted the teen had heroin, cocaine, methamphetaine and marijuana in her blood.
