** Nova Scotia combat medic to receive medal for bravery

** Long term medical care costs for beaten California paramedic estimated at $50 million

** A Halifax, Nova Scotia army combat medic is set to receive the Medal of Military Valor in late September in Quebec City. That is the word from the Chronicle Herald (Clare Mellor/September 10) which said Cpl. Bradley Casey, 28, will receive the commendation September 20 from Gov. Gen. David Johnston. According to the newspaper, Casey’s award recognizes his saving a wounded soldier while taking fire in southern Afghanistan last year on February 18. Casey, who has served 10 years in the military, was deployed to the country from September 2009-May 2010.

** Long term medical care for beaten California paramedic Bryan Stow, 42, could top out at around $50 million. That is the figure being given by the Associated Press (September 13) which quoted from estimates included in the Stow family lawsuit against Dodgers’ owner Frank McCourt as well as 13 others. According to the newspaper, the suit is alleging the ball club had both a lack of security and lighting present at the time of the March 31st attack. Stow, who is currently recovering in a San Francisco hospital, suffered significant brain injuries as a result of the assault. His doctor said his prognosis is unknown. Meanwhile, two people charged in relation to the beating have pleaded not guilty.
