** Toronto medic nominated as contender for Time Magazine’s 100 most influential

** Memorial fund established for California EMT LODD

** A Toronto paramedic has been nominated as a contender for Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world. Time (April 1) profiled Toronto EMS provider Raul Singh on page 75 of its online edition. According to the magazine, Singh founded and runs GlobalMedic, an organization which dispatches prehospital providers to disaster spots around the globe. Providing expertise in the area of training and on-the-spot EMS, GlobalMedic also focuses on clean water provision. To date, the organization has provided more than 9 million litres of clean drinking water, with about one million litres a week being processed.

** The memorial service for a San Diego EMT, killed last Thursday in an on-the-job pedestrian/car accident, remains pending, but a fund in his honor has been set up. That is the word from the San Diego Union-Tribune (Susan Shroder/April 2) which said an account in memory of Esteban Behena has been established at the local Fire Fighters Credit Union. According to the newspaper, Behena, 24, leaves two sisters and a father in Mexico to mourn. His mother died two years ago on the same date. Those interested in contributing money can do so at:  San Diego Fire Fighters Credit Union, account number 1214D, and mailed to the union at 4926 La Cuenta Drive, San Diego, CA 92124. Meanwhile, Behena’s partner at the time has spoken out on the crash, saying it occurred after the two happened upon pulled over drivers following a freeway accident. NBC San Diego (Gene Cubbison/April 2) quoted Paul Santos as saying Behena did not regain consciousness after being hit. Dubbing him as someone who always put others before himself, Santos said Behena aspired to be a paramedic.
