** Ontario inquest will look at whether EMS diversions played role in teen’s death

** South African EMS responders begin running mocks to ensure proper prehospital coverage during upcoming World Cup

CANADA NEWS

** Ontario is looking into the issue of ambulance diversions and the impact one such bypass had on the death of a Toronto teen. That is the word from the Canadian Press (March 2) which said an inquest was called Tuesday into the demise of Reilley Anzovino, 18. According to the newspaper, Anzovino died on December 27 of last year after being injured in a car crash. Although a Fort Erie ER was only 15 kilometres from the scene, medics were diverted both from that ER and one in Port Colbourne. Eventually, Anzovino was transported to Welland, 20 kilometres from the crash;she died on arrival. Provincial MP Kim Craitor, who pushed for an investigation, said she was pleased the look-see was announced so quickly. Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak agreed, saying he has long feared the consequences of reduced hospital coverage in small and northern communities.

SOUTH AFRICA NEWS

** Johannesburg EMS workers, as well as other emergency responders, are kicking into high gear with mock scenarios to ensure proper prehospital coverage during the upcoming 2010 World Cup. According to the city’s website (March 2), a plane crash simulation was held Friday. Practitioners involved were not alerted in advance to the 11 a.m. call. EMS media liaison officer Nana Radebe said the exercise not only strengthens links between agencies, it also identifies areas where improved response is needed. The 2010 World Cup is set for June 11-July 11. It is the first time an African nation has hosted the sporting event.
