** Winnipeg EMS union calls for independent review of Fire Paramedic Service
UNITED STATES NEWS
** Flags in Acton, Massachusetts will fly at half mast today to honor the life of a military medic killed April 8th in Afghanistan. That is the word from The Patch (Jason Claffey/April 17) which said the tribute to Spc. John M. Dawson, 22, who grew up in Whitinsville, will take place on the day of his funeral in Upton. Dawson, who succumbed to wounds suffered from a small arms fire incident near Jalalabad, was based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He leaves behind his parents, a sister, and extended family.
CANADA NEWS
** The union representing Winnipeg paramedics in Manitoba is agitating for an outside review of how the Fire Paramedic Service is run. The Carillon (Aldo Santin/April 18) quoted Manitoba Government Employees Union (MGEU) President Michelle Gawronsky as questioning the cost involved in having fire trucks and personnel respond to medical calls. According to the newspaper, Gawronsky said more money should be devoted to increasing the number of ambulances on the road. She said an independent look-see should examine whether the  base assumption that a tiered response model involving fire is cost effective at all. Her comments come at a time when Fire Chief John Lane has publicly defended the integrated EMS/fire service as excellent when it comes to EMS provision. An Ontario agency, meanwhile, reviewing the Winnipeg approach said it resulted in lower costs but poor response times for both ambulances and fire trucks.
