** UK paramedic avoids ban after calling female patient who later died a faker

UNITED KINGDOM NEWS

** A North West Ambulance Service medic can still practice EMS with restrictions after telling a woman who later died that she was faking her illness. The Manchester Evening News (Tom Earnshaw/Chris Slater/October 21) said Anthony Morris narrowly avoided a complete ban after evidence was heard at the Health and Care Professions Tribunal Service last month. According to the newspaper, the tribunal heard Morris was called to treat Beatrice Lovane, 22,  after she collapsed August 26, 2016 at home. Morris, a new paramedic at the time, was the first EMS practitioner on scene. After a cursory assessment, he  told the woman’s mother she was faking. Lovane was later found to have died after taking co-codamol pills which caused organ failure due to an undiagnosed fatty liver. The tribunal ruled a regretful Morris did not do an adequate clinical assessment and failed to transport Lovane to hospital in a reasonable amount of time. Despite this, the tribunal said the call was not a clear reflection of his overall work, As discipline, therefore, he was placed on probation for a year and mandated to work with another qualified paramedic at all times. He will also be supervised by a workplace overseer who will assist him in improving his work performance.
