** South African officials in Johannesburg institute police escorts for ambulances after recent spate of attacks
SOUTH AFRICA NEWSÂ
** In an effort to stem the recent upswing in attacks on paramedics, Johannesburg emergency officials say police escorts of ambulances responding in dangerous areas will now be implemented. That is the word from The Independent (Anna Cox/July 3) which said the measure accompanies other innovations such as medic self defence training and pepper spray, as well as panic buttons. According to the newspaper, screeners will also attempt to weed out fake calls designed to lure unsuspecting prehospital crews.
