** South African paramedic facing armed robbery charges for allegedly hijacking ambulance, robbing medic

SOUTH AFRICA NEWS

** A Cape Town area paramedic is set to appear in court today on charges that he hijacked an ambulance Friday and robbed its occupants. That is the word from The Independent (Caryn Dolley/May 15) which said the Mitchells Plain practitioner, 31, allegedly set upon the EMS unit while it was outside a fire station. According to the newspaper, the 11 p.m. incident played out as the prehospital crew was treating a patient. Two men armed with knives then stormed the unit, getting into a physical fight with the practitioners before the driver of the ambulance fled for help. The patient also escaped while the remaining female medic had her cell phone taken.  Though details remain sketchy, the medic alleged to have hijacked the EMS unit turned himself in to police Saturday. Authorities say he will likely be charged with armed robbery.
