** Michigan man who attacked 2 EMTs last October set for competency hearing

** April 21st has been set as the date for a competency hearing for a Detroit, Michigan man who attacked two EMTs with a box cutter last October 20th. WDIV (March 14) said Michael Montgomery is charged with assault with intent to murder x 2, assault with the intent to do great bodily harm x 2, assault with intent to maim x 1, and resisting and obstructing causing serious injury x 1. He is also charged with first-degree murder, felony murder, sexual assault, criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, torture, and a felony firearm violation involving two other cases. According to the news station, the upcoming hearing will reveal the results of testing done on Montgomery in January. Montgomery’s EMS victims, meanwhile, continue to recover. Kelly Adams said she is paralyzed on the left side of her face, while partner Al Rojas’ injuries stemmed from being punched and stabbed in the hand.

** A South Carolina paramedic from Florence had her right leg amputated Friday after a Wednesday head-on crash with a drunk driver. WNCN (March 12) said Pamplico resident Tessie Odom Smith, 47, who has worked EMS for over 20 years, remains in critical condition in hospital. A press release quoted by the newspaper said in addition to the Friday surgery she is expected to soon undergo several other procedures. A GoFundMe account has been set up to assist in medical costs. Smith’s partner, Joshua Craig, 29, meanwhile, was treated and released from hospital. The driver of the truck has been charged with felony DUI and driving under suspension.
