** North Carolina EMT collapses, dies at work

** A Detroit, Michigan EMT is recovering after a Tuesday night incident in which the family of a patient attacked him. The Detroit Free Press (Daniel Bethencourt/March 8) said the 7:30 p.m. call played out with the practitioner being injured when an unknown object was lobbed through the rear window of the EMS unit. Medics were treating the patient at the time. According to the newspaper, the object busted through the glass, striking the EMT. He was transported to hospital, treated, and released. No motive has been given for the assault. The police, meanwhile, are continuing to investigate. No arrests have been made.

** A North Carolina EMT is dead after collapsing at a call Tuesday morning. That is the word from The Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald (March 9) which said Gates County Rescue and EMS medic Steve Toppin, 53, suffered shortness of breath while he and his partner were treating a critical patient. According to the newspaper, Toppin was transported to hospital, but died shortly afterwards. He was 53-years-old. Funeral services are pending.
