** Type I diabetic Indiana paramedic wins discrimination suit against former employer
UNITED STATES NEWS
** A fire department paramedic in Indiana, fired because of diabetes related on-the-job medical
events, has won a large discrimination settlement from her township. That is the word from WTSP
(USA Today/December 21) which said Wayne Township resident Kristine Rednour was awarded
$725,000 in damages in the federal action which dealt with her 2011 sacking. According to the
news site, Rednour, who has suffered from Type I diabetes since the age of 12, based her case
on the Americans With Disabilities Act. She contended her termination was a violation of her civil rights.
The original settlement of $123,500 in lost wages and $100,000 for emotional distress was awarded
in July. The further $501,500 was for future wages lost. Experts testifying at her trial said the
termination was unnecessary as the matter could have been resolved by Rednour wearing a glucose
monitor with a loud alarm. This would have alerted co-workers around her that she was
experiencing a problem. Rednour currently works as a hospital ER paramedic
