SOUTH AFRICA NEWS
** An on campus medic at University of Western Cape in Cape Town was severely injured
Wednesday after protesters attempted to burn down a student residence. Eyewitness News
(Xolani Koyana/Natalie Malgas/November 11) said the provider was attacked while attempting
to extinguish the fire. According to the news service, the practitioner remains in hospital with
undisclosed injuries. Police, meanwhile, have essentially shut down the campus, with armed
guards patrolling the premises. Earlier, stun grenades and rubber bullets had been used to disperse
the students, some of whom were armed with rocks and wearing balaclavas. The exact nature of the
protest remains murky. However, the initial spark for the violence appears to have occurred when
five people were arrested earlier in the day for an illegal gathering. Though by evening  things
seemed to have calmed down, several students said the protests would continue until the university
administration listened to their demands.
