UNITED STATES NEWS
** Michigan police in Grand Rapids have arrested a man accused of murdering his paramedic
girlfriend Monday and then setting her body alight. Michigan Live (Angie Jackson/November 11)
said Donald Alexander Spice, 45, has been charged with open murder in the death of Aero Med
practitioner Lori Vargas, 37. According to the newspaper, Spice apparently admitted the murder to
police, saying it followed a domestic argument at their home. He then put Vargas’ body into their
vehicle, drove to the Hesperia High School Football Field, and torched the car. Spice’s previous
convictions include five for breaking and entering. Vargas, who was the mother of 2 girls,
was remembered yesterday at a vigil. Funeral services are pending.
** Funeral services are set for today for a Kentucky medic killed last week after being hit by a car.
Lex 18 (November 12) said the commemoration for Jessamine County practitioner John Mackey
will take place at 2 p.m. at Nicholasville’s Bethel Harvest Church. Visitation was yesterday. According
to the newspaper, Mackey died after a truck sideswiped the mirror on the ambulance. When
Mackey got out of the EMS unit to survey the damage, he stepped between 2 parked cars and was
immediately hit by a vehicle slowly accelerating after a red light. Police have not charged the
17-year-old driver, saying she had no time to react to Mackey’s actions. The driver of the pickup
truck from the initial accident, meanwhile, never stopped after the mirror collision.
