** Former Indiana medic’s appeal on charges of murdering co-workers rejected
UNITED STATES NEWS
** A former Indianapolis, Indiana medic has lost his appeal before the state Supreme Court to have
a conviction for murdering two EMTs overturned. That is the word from the WBIW (September 24)
which said judges ruled against Christopher Helsley Thursday. According to the news site, Helsley
was contending mitigating circumstances in the 2001 fatal shootings of Pike County practitioners
Marsha Rainey and Brad Maxwell. Along with claiming mental illness was a factor, his attorney
also said his lack of a previous criminal record should also have held sway. The court, however,
disagreed, saying the murders were calculated, premeditated, and unprovoked. Judges also said
the sentence was appropriate given Helsley’s character and the severity of the crime. Convicted
initially in 2002, he was also convicted on retrial in 2013.
