** UK paramedic cautioned after using confidential patient info to try to get date with woman
UNITED STATES NEWS
** A Wichita, Kansas man had to be tased Friday by police after attempting to gain control of the ambulance
during a hospital transport. That is the word from Eyewitness 12 News (August 17) which said the male patient dived
into the front cab, grabbing the unit’s gear shift and gas pedal. According to the newspaper, once the driver of
the ambulance regained control, the unit pulled over and a following police officer let loose with his stun gun.
Initially remaining on his feet, the man soon collapsed and was handcuffed. Police, who said EMS was
originally called because of the patient’s erratic behaviour, indicated he was likely on drugs at the time.
UNITED KINGDOM NEWS
** A Yorkshire paramedic has been given a 5 year caution by the Health Care Professions Council after using
confidential patient records so he could ask a woman out on a date. The Examiner (Nick Lavigueur/August 17)
said Mohamed Saeed, who has since been fired, admitted breaching data confidentiality laws with his actions.
According to the newspaper, Saeed ‘s misconduct began after attending a September 2013 call for a
20-year-old female patient being attended to by a female friend. Transporting the patient to hospital, he then
looked up next of kin information and texted the patient’s mother to find out about the second woman. The mother
then forwarded the message to her daughter who alerted a ward nurse of Saeed’s creepy inquiries. The friend,
who had a boyfriend at the time, denied encouraging Saeed in any way. As a result of the incident, he
remained unemployed for about a year.
