UNITED STATES NEWS
** Baltimore paramedics in Maryland are mourning the loss of a colleague, after medic Nick Hemingway suffered a cardiac arrest at work Tuesday and died. That is the word from WBAL (July 19) which said Hemingway had complained of feeling ill throughout the shift before being transported to hospital in the afternoon. Working out of the Liberty Heights station, he was also a volunteer with both the Burtonsville Volunteer Fire Department in Montgomery County and the Chillum Adelphia and Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Departments in Prince George’s County. There is no word on whether or not funeral services have taken place.
** A New York paramedic is being credited with saving the life of a near drowning victim after he jumped into the Hudson River Monday to aid a woman who was clinging to a life preserver. CBS New York (July 20) said Niall O’Shaughnessey made the risky move around 7:30 a.m. after he noted the women’s fatigue meant she was unlikely to stay above the water. Parks Department personnel, meanwhile, who had tossed her a life preserver, remained on shore. Along with staying with her until the FDNY Marine Unit arrived on-scene, O’Shaughnessy said his presence beside her in the water also kept the woman calm. Once on shore, she was assessed, but did not suffer any significant injury from her ordeal. There is no word on how she ended up in the water in the first place.
