** An Indiana paramedic from South Bend has escaped jail time after being convicted in the January 2014 hit-and-run death of a pedestrian. That is the word from WNDU (January 26) which said Jeremy Bontrager, 25, was sentenced to 18 months jail time, but the judge determined the term would be served on probation. According to the news site, Bontrager will be under home detention for nine months and must pay $1,900 restitution. Bontrager pleaded ignorance in relation to the death of Ronald Rogers, 56. He said he heard a noise when he was driving, but when he saw nothing on the road, he left.

** New Brunswick police in Tracadie-Sheila are searching for suspects in a Sunday morning hit-and-run with an ambulance. The CBC (January 26) said the 5 a.m. collision, which did not injure the medics, involved a Crown Victoria and occurred on icy roads near Losier Settlement. According to the news service, a Crime Stoppers Alert has now been put out. The EMS unit was unloaded at the time.
