** FDNY EMS captain to be extradited to California on child sex abuse charges
** First sexual assault trial for Nova Scotia paramedic begins;other case pending
UNITED STATES NEWS
** A New York City EMS captain waived extradition Monday on charges he sexually assaulted two young boys in California. WABC (September 29) said Wilburt Riera appeared in a Staten Island Court instead and has been charged with six felony counts of lewd act on a child under 14. The incidents allegedly occurred in Los Angeles on September 12th and 14th.  Currently suspended without pay for 30 days, Riera’s case has been adjourned until next Thursday.  Extradition proceedings will begin at that time. If he is convicted of the crimes, he could face life in prison. Riera has worked for the FDNY for over 20 years.
CANADA NEWS
** The trial of a Nova Scotia paramedic, accused of sexually assaulting a female patient in his care, began yesterday in Windsor provincial court. The CBC (September 29) said James Duncan Keats stands accused of attacking a 71-year-old woman twice between September 2012 and May 2013. Additional sexual assault charges involving five other Halifax women are still winding their way through the courts. A preliminary hearing on these matters has already been held. Keats, meanwhile, remains suspended from his job pending the outcome of the cases.
