** Omaha woman convicted of shooting gun in ambulance faces 125 years in jail

** Sentencing has been set for January for an Nebraska woman who pleaded no contest to shooting off a gun in the back of an ambulance. The World-Herald (Kevin Cole/November 6) said Omaha resident Justine DuBois, 24, entered her plea Wednesday in Douglas County District Court. According to the newspaper, DuBois could face up to 125 years in jail for the conviction related to charges of terroristic threats, use of a weapon to commit a felony, possession of a gun by a prohibited person, and theft by receiving. A felony assault charge was dropped. Although paramedic Brock Borhart was injured when the weapon discharged, the wound was not caused by a bullet. DuBois was originally arrested July 3rd in relation to a car theft, but faked a seizure to prompt the calling of an ambulance. The weapon, which was stored in her waistband, escaped the notice of an officer doing a pat down prior to her getting into the EMS unit.

** Continued austerity measures aimed at getting the country’s economy back on track prompted a general strike Wednesday, with ambulance services functioning with only emergency staff responding. That is the word from the Artesia News (AP/November 6) which said peaceful demonstrations also disrupted public transport, schools, and airports. The strike comes at a time when budget talks are ongoing over a growing shortfall that has left the nation dependent on bailouts and help from foreign powers like the IMF, European Central Commission, and the European Central Bank. Since 2009, average disposable income losses for individual Greeks sit at about 40 per cent, while unemployment rates hover around the 28 per cent mark.
