** Lawyers seeking to transfer convicted killer of US combat medic to lesser security Alberta jail
** Saskatoon medics in Saskatchewan see 60 % jump in pedestrians being hit by cars
CANADA NEWS
** The lawyers for the convicted killer of a US combat medic are attempting to have Omar Khadr transferred to an Alberta provincial jail from his current maximum security lock-up. The Calgary Herald (Sheila Pratt/Edmonton Journal/September 23) said Khadr’s counsel began arguments on his behalf in court Monday. According to the newspaper, lawyers say the move should be done because Khadr, 27, was a teenager at the time of the 2002 killing of Sgt. Christopher Speer in Afghanistan. Khadr was repatriated to Canada last year after being incarcerated at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for ten years. In 2010, he pleaded guilty to the crime in a military tribunal and was given eight years. Originally serving out his sentence in Kingston, Ontario, he was transferred to Edmonton in May.
** MD Ambulance medics in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan are seeing a record number of pedestrians being hit by cars. That is the word from CJME (Justin Blackwell/September 23) which said 16 individuals were struck in September. According to the news service, the figure is a 60 per cent increase over incidents taking place this time last year. MD Ambulance spokesman Troy Davies said he is at a loss to explain the jump. Davies did say, however, increased distractions from practices like texting may play a part.
