** Funeral arrangements are pending for a Los Angeles Fire Department Fire Capt./paramedic who collapsed and died suddenly while on the job Monday. The Los Angeles Daily News (Christina Villacorte/August 12) said Matthew McKnight, 51, was found unresponsive at the Metropolitan Fire Communications Center at 1:07 a.m. His collapse was unwitnessed. Though colleagues worked him, he was pronounced dead at hospital. He leaves behind a wife, a son, and a daughter. Autopsy results are pending.
** A Long Island, New York EMT could serve up to four years in jail for allegedly attempting to bribe an undercover reporter to take his state certification exam. That is the word from the New York Post (Andy Soltis/August 14) which said Bernard Shore, 65, has been tagged with criminal solicitation, offering a false instrument for filing, and official misconduct. According to the newspaper, Shore, who worked with the Port Washington Fire Department, offered the reporter $400 this past June to do the job. He had advertised on Craig’s List for an impersonator. The scam was publicized in the newspaper July 21st and Shore was fired shortly afterwards. A state health commissioner said Shore’s actions were dangerous and could have jeopardized lives.
