** An Oregon paramedic and EMS manager, injured last week in an off-duty motorcycle crash, remains in critical condition in hospital. That is the word from OPB (August 12) which said Madras resident and Jefferson County EMS practitioner Donald Heckathorn, 64, was struck by a car Thursday as he travelled on Highway 97. He was wearing a helmet at the time. The driver of the car, meanwhile, sustained no injuries in the crash. Initial information indicates he failed to stop at a stop sign just before striking Heckathorn.

** EMS brass in Bournemouth are investigating after a heavily pregnant MVA victim was left at the side of the road for her husband to transport to hospital. The Dorset Echo (August 12) said the July 30th incident involving the South Western Ambulance Service played out with medics informing Yolanda Humphrey, 30, that the car accident would not impact her or her baby. Practitioners told the woman she had enough padding to protect the infant. According to the newspaper, Humphrey said she was complaining of stomach pains at the time, but was ignored while paramedics left and police took her friend and her daughter home. She remained on a nearby bench until her husband came to collect her.
