** Sorority alumni of murdered Indiana medic Kelly Doane Emerick, 48, have set up a scholarship fund to aid in future educational expenses for her 11-year-old daughter. That is the word from the Greene County Daily World (Nick Schneider/July 24) which said the fund was announced three days ahead of Emerick’s funeral. Emerick, who was shot and killed Monday by her live-in firefighter boyfriend, will be remembered in Bloomington at 11 a.m. at the Allen Funeral Home. Emerick was working as a paramedic supervisor at IU Health Emergency Medical Transport Service in Bloomington at the time of her death. She and firefighter William Randy Roudebush, 42, had co-habitated about eight years. Funeral services for Roudebush have yet to be announced.
** The family of an Iowa flight nurse killed in a January 2nd air ambulance crash are suing Med-Trans helicopter service and the estate of the deceased pilot. The Globe Gazette (John Skipper/July 24) said family members of Shelley Lair-Lagenbau claim the company was negligent in allowing Gene Grell to fly when icing conditions made it unsafe. Lair-Lagenbau, 44, died in the mishap alongside Grell and flight paramedic Russell Piehl, 48. Alleging that Bell 407 choppers can not operate in ice conditions, the suit also claims the company is responsible for Grell’s failures contributing to the crash. Along with improperly assessing the weather, Grell is accused of failing to abort the flight when he knew icing conditions were endangering it. In addition, the brief claims Grell both flew the helicopter improperly and that he erred in neglecting to obtain pre-flight weather data. Compensatory and punitive damages are being sought. A jury trial has been requested.
