UNITED STATES NEWS

** A Staten Island, New York paramedic is dead after a Monday MVA with a car. PIX11 (August 28) said Staten Island University Hospital medic David Restuccio, 58, died around 7:10 p.m. after a BMW crossed the centre line into the opposing ambulance’s path. The EMS unit then overturned, trapping Restuccio. The Gothamist (August 28) said witnesses indicated Restuccio was alive and yelling for help at the scene. He died later in hospital. His partner, Yusuke Yonehara, and an onboard patient suffered only minor injuries in the crash. A retired FDNY paramedic with 25 years in EMS, Restuccio was also a 9/11 veteran who had appeared on the national news following the terrorist attacks.

CANADA NEWS

** Manitoba RCMP officers are investigating after a Tuesday morning crash that saw an ambulance roll into a ditch. That is the word from the CBC (August 28) which said the 7 a.m. mishap near Neepawa occurred as the EMS unit was returning to its Swan River base. Carrying no patients at the time, the rig did have two paramedics on-board. Neither suffered any injuries. No other vehicle was involved in the crash. Initial information indicates paramedic fatigue was likely responsible for the accident. Union spokesman Wayne Chacun said the practitioners involved had been on-call and had gone nearly 24 hours without any sleep.
