** Proposed New York state law would see killers of EMTs face first degree murder charges

** Mexican drug mules use ambulance to transport marijuana

UNITED STATES NEWS

** A New York state senator is seeking to make the killing of EMTs and firefighters first degree murder. That is the word from YNN (May 14) which said the proposed statute, sponsored by Senator Patty Richie, would make those convicted of killing the aforementioned public safety officers subject to mandatory life sentences. According to the news site, the bill, dubbed Mark’s Law, is being named after Cape Vincent EMT Mark Davis who was shot and killed while responding to a 2009 call. Prior to becoming law, the bill must first be passed by the Assembly and then sent to the governor for signing.

MEXICO NEWS

** A pair of drug mules near Chihuahua remain in jail this week, after being arrested earlier this month for transporting marijuana in an ambulance. The El Paso Times (Daniel Borunda/May 12) said the two men, who hid the drugs in a false compartment, were stopped by police on a highway leading to Villa Ahumada. Under the pretext of going to the locale to pick up a sick patient, the two men were actually carrying some 792 pounds of the drug. Under interrogation, they told police they were to be paid some $830 for a successful drop. Ivan Alfredo Acosta and Ramon Daniel Rojo Nava have been charged with transportation of marijuana. There is no word on when or if bail will be granted.
