** Kentucky EMT released from home detention following drugged driving sentence

** Bahraini paramedics, nurses, and doctors arrested and charged following anti-government riots

** A former Louisville, Kentucky EMT, whose drug induced ambulance crash killed a patient three years ago, has been released from home detention. That is the word from WLKY TV (May 4) which said Tammy Brewer, who began her sentence in December, remains on probation for five years. According to the newspaper, Brewer’s legal odyssey began in April of 2008 when she got behind the wheel of the EMS unit while high on methadone. She was transferring patient Vickie Whobrey, 54, to hospital for a nose bleed;Whobrey died in the wreck. Whobrey’s daughter Maggie said she was disgusted with the light sentence Brewer received. She said it was clear that Brewer would only repeat her offence at a later time.

BAHRAIN NEWS

** Human rights activists in Bahrain say several paramedics, 24 doctors, and 23 nurses are being detained at a military base as punishment for aiding anti-government protesters during recent rioting.. The LA Times (May 4) quoted the country’s justice minister as saying the group have been charged with incitement to overthrow a political regime, spreading false and malicious rumors harmful to the public interest, and participating in unauthorized rallies or meetings. According to the newspaper, the spate of arrests is in reprisal for the February protests in Manama’s Pearl Square. One unidentified person said all hospitals have been virtually shut down since then, with medical care undertaken in private homes only.
