** New Mexico EMT in critical condition following car/ambulance crash

** Funeral set for Massachusetts combat medic killed in Afghanistan

** A New Mexico EMT remains in critical condition in hospital after the ambulance she was riding in was struck by a wrong way car going 100 mph Tuesday. KRQE (December 14) said Vanessa Carillo, 19, who was alone in the EMS unit and returning from a patient drop-off, was airlifted to Albuquerque’s University of New Mexico Hospital after the extent of her injuries became known upon arrival at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center. One passenger in the car died, though a second passenger was taken to hospital and is in stable condition; it is unclear who was driving. According to the news site, the car was going the wrong way on the I-25 outside Santa Fe around 2:30 a.m. when it crossed the center line into the ambulance’s path. Alcohol is believed to have been a possible factor contributing to the accident.

** Saturday has been set as the date for the funeral for a Salem, Massachusetts combat medic killed last Wednesday in Afghanistan. The Salem News (Tom Dalton/December 15) said services for Sgt. James Ayube, 25, will be held at the St. James Church at 11 a.m. Visitation will take place Friday from 3 – 7 p.m. at the Spychalski Funeral Home. Ayube died in Kandahar Province after a suicide bomber detonated his explosives where Ayube and soldier Kelly J. Mixon were standing. The Gloucester Times (Jesse Roman/December 12) said Ayube had been in the country since June and was set to go on leave in less than a month. Ayube leaves a wife behind.
