UNITED KINGDOM NEWS

** Police in South London have charged a paramedic with murdering his infant son. That is the word from The Daily Mail (July 15) which said the unnamed 40-year-old Erith practitioner allegedly killed the baby on October 25, 2008. According to the newspaper, the medic has also been tagged with assaulting the boy’s twin sister. The man’s wife, who had previously been held on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and allowing or causing the death of a child, has not been charged. The news site Ananova (July 15) identified the woman as a London Ambulance Service call operator. The baby in question, meanwhile, who was three months old at the time of his death, died from a head injury.

CANADA NEWS

** Despite Ontario’s EMS and outside workers’ strike dragging on, the premier of the province says he has no intention of steppping in. City News (July 15) quoted Dalton McGuinty as saying he is content with the way in which negotiations are proceeding. Noting the job action has only been going for 25 days, McGunity said he expected matters to be soon resolved. Among the sticking points for the union is the issue of inadequate sick days and salaries. In an effort to force a resolution to the current impasse, city councillors were lobbying for a special meeting last night to discuss matters.
