** California teen to stand trial in slaying of paramedic
** Iraqi paramedic killed following suicide bombing
UNITED STATES NEWS
** A 17-year-old Oakland, California teen will stand trial in the April shooting death of a paramedic. That is the word from the Associated Press (October 30) which said Christian Burton, who will be tried as an adult, has already entered a not guilty plea. According to the news service, Burton allegedly shot Quinn Boyer, 34, as he was in his car stopped at a red light. Police say the hit was a carjacking gone wrong, with five other boys in a stolen vehicle backing Burton up. In testimony given at a preliminary hearing, police Sgt. Randy Brandwood said Burton admitted shooting Boyer but said it was an accident. Burton said he was originally after Boyer’s iPhone.
IRAQ NEWS
** A Mosul paramedic is dead after being targeted by terrorists who shot him when he responded to a suicide bomb attack Tuesday. The International Business Times (Umberto Bacchi/October 30) said the incident at a police checkpoint also injured three other EMS medics. The shooting was just part of a bloody day in which some 20 people were killed and dozens injured in separate suicide strikes. According to the newspaper, ethnic violence, which is at its highest rate in years in the country, is the root of the assaults. Some 4,000 people have died in such fighting in the last few months. An upcoming US visit by Iraqi president Nouri al-Maliki is expected to include an appeal for assistance to deal with terrorists.
