** London Ambulance Service in UK recruiting medics from overseas
UNITED STATES NEWS
** An Ohio ambulance medic received only minor injuries Thursday when he fell asleep at the wheel while transporting a patient. WFMJ (February 6) said the unnamed practitioner from Ashtabula told police he dozed off around 3 p.m. along Route 11. The EMS unit left the road during his nap, slightly tipping before remaining upright. The driver, a second provider, and a patient were taken to hospital but released shortly afterwards. Police say they are investigating.
UNITED KINGDOM NEWS
** In an effort to bolster dwindling medic ranks, the London Ambulance Service is taking the unprecedented step of recruiting overseas. That is the word from the BBC (February 7) which said Australia and New Zealand would be the primary focus as the skill levels most closely match those in the UK. According to the news service, the organization has secured 100 work visas annually from the UK Border Agency to bring in new workers. Those from outside the country who secure contracts would be given a short orientation prior to being put on the trucks.
