** Searchers locate body of California paramedic who went missing while camping
** Funeral held for Mississippi paramedics killed in 18-wheeler/ambulance crash
UNITED STATES NEWS
** Search and rescue workers in California have recovered the body of an Arcadia paramedic missing in the Los Padres National Forest since June 13th. KTLA 5 (July 1) said a pilot delivering ground searchers was the first to spot the remains of Mike Herdman, 36, on an area cliff side. According to the newspaper, Herdman died from blunt force trauma. He disappeared during a camping trip in which he was last seen looking for his lost dog. He was clad in a t-shirt and shorts, with bare feet at the time. MyFoxLA (AP/July 1) said Herdman’s remains were found within a mile of his campsite, but, oddly, they were 1,000 feet up a steep canyon.
** Funeral services have been held for two Mississippi paramedics killed last week in a crash with an 18-wheeler. WTOK (July 1) said the Meridian commemoration for Alan Smith, 48, who died alongside Dennis Rushing, 31, included participation from EMS, fire, and police agencies. Smith, who worked for ASAP Ambulance in Laurel, and Rushing perished June 24th while responding to an emergency call. Both medics died instantly when an 18-wheeler made a left turn in front of them. The Meridian Star (July 1) said information indicates the unit was lit up but did not have its siren going. Along with his EMS work, Smith was also a volunteer firefighter and barber. Funeral services for Rushing, meanwhile, took place Monday in Summit. Rushing, who leaves his fiancé, parents, a sister and extended family behind, had previously worked EMS with Acadian Ambulance Service and North Shore Ambulance Service.
