** Sentencing set for fall for Nova Scotia paramedic convicted on drug charges

** A Kentucky man has been charged with assaulting first responders and robbery after forcing an EMS crew from an ambulance before stealing it. That is the word from WLKY (Jennifer Weigel/July 2) which said Louisville resident Ricky Abrams, 28, allegedly pulled off the June 24th heist as he was being transferred between a Richmond facility and a Louisville psychiatric hospital. According to the news site (Marissa Alter/June 25), Abrams overpowered the medic in the rear cab before entering the front compartment and dumping the driver. After driving for several minutes, he crashed the ambulance. No one was injured in the incident, though the EMS unit itself suffered minor damage.

** Sentencing has been set for October for a Halifax, Nova Scotia paramedic who pleaded guilty Wednesday to stealing morphine from his ambulance service. The Chronicle Herald (Steve Bruce/July 2) said Zachary Ewan Dewar, 26, copped the plea ahead of a scheduled trial next week in the province’s Supreme Court. Dewar, who was arrested in February of last year, admitted illegal possession of morphine, theft under $5,000 and mischief. A charge of breach of public trust was stayed. At the point of his arrest, Dewar was off duty outside an ambulance station. Police said he had the morphine on him at the time.
