** FDNY investigating medics who allegedly stood by and failed to help man attacked by cops
** New Zealand man sentenced to jail time for attacking female medic treating his son

** Fire Department of New York (FDNY) officials are investigating four Richmond University Hospital medics after the group allegedly failed to help a man who went unconscious and later died after a police officer put him in a choke hold Thursday. That is the word from the New York Post (Georgette Roberts/CJ Sullivan/Laura Italiano/July 20) which said attending EMS practitioners did not immediately check ABCs or even place diabetic asthmatic Eric Garner on the stretcher. In a 7 minute video of the incident, none of the eight cops or 4 EMS providers render any real aid. Once at hospital Garner suffered a fatal cardiac arrest. According to the newspaper, the incident played out after cops approached Garner around 5 p.m. for illegally selling cigarettes. As matters escalated, undercover officer Daniel Pantaleo then placed him in a choke hold in violation of police policy. Pantaleo has since been placed on desk duty. In the past, he has been named in two civil lawsuits. In one, he and three other policemen illegally stopped a vehicle and strip searched two male occupants. The EMS medics, meanwhile, have been placed on modified duties. (Verena Dobnik/AP/July 21)
NEW ZEALAND NEWS
** A Palmerston North man has been sentenced to six weeks in jail for attacking a female paramedic caring for his son. The Manawatu Standard (Matthew Grocott/July 21) said David Munro, 40, was given the sentence Monday. According to the newspaper, Munro initially hailed EMS after his three-year-old son stopped breathing. Once medics arrived, he became agitated at their supposedly slow speed in helping the child. Pushing the female practitioner several times, he forced her at one point to fall back onto the stretcher inside the ambulance. He then threatened to hunt her down and harm her. The medic took stress leave following the incident. Munro’s sentence also includes penalties for threatening hospital staff treating his son.
