** Nova Scotia medic fired while on trial for sexually assaulting elderly woman
** Illinois paramedic/firefighter suspended after allegedly punching female bartender while off duty
CANADA NEWS
** A Nova Scotia paramedic, currently on trial for allegedly twice sexually assaulting a 71-year-old woman, has been fired. That is the word from CBC (December 30) which said James Duncan Keats was let go from his job after court testimony indicated he had violated the service’s EHS Ethical Code of Conduct. Emergency Health Services spokesman Stacy Brown said the decision came after police tapes showed Keats first denying the charge, then waffling to admit inappropriate sexual conduct with the woman. The woman has, however, steadfastly maintained the contact was not consensual. A judge, nevertheless, has ruled Keats’ police statements inadmissible since they were involuntary and obtained after 15 hours of detention at the police station. The case will not resume in court until March.
