** South African paramedic union leader, accused of torching 2 ambulances, let out on bail
** London, UK bike medic tracks down purse snatcher
SOUTH AFRICA NEWS
** A Durban paramedic leader, arrested last month for allegedly torching two ambulances during strike action, has now been released from jail on a bond. That is the word from East Coast Radio (Khatija Nxedlana/June 2) which said Sifiso Diamini was let out after the prosecution retreated from its insistence on restrictions on Diamini’s movements. According to the news site, prosecutors wanted bail conditions to include prohibitions against entering any ambulance bases or health care facilities. Council for Diamini, however, argued this would infringe on his ability to function as an EMS union head. There is no word yet on future court proceedings in the case.
UNITED KINGDOM NEWS
** A London Ambulance Service paramedic is being credited with helping an elderly female mugging victim after he first stopped a purse thief, then chased him down for police. The Standard (Sebastian Mann/June 2) said motorcycle medic Daniel Whittard heard the woman screaming for help around 6 p.m. as he filled out paperwork from another call. Seeing the mugger had the woman on the ground and was struggling to acquire the purse, Whittard gave chase. Initially losing the man down a side street, he nabbed him as he returned to his motorcycle. The alleged purse snatcher, 39, remained in custody Tuesday on suspicion of robbery. Whittard, meanwhile, remained humble about helping the lady, saying police do that sort of thing every day.
