** Oklahoma National Guard medic commended for risking his own life to save pregnant stabbing victim
** Texas man arrested, charged in murder of female combat medic
UNITED STATES NEWS
** An Oklahoma National Guard medic was awarded the service’s second highest honor Sunday when he was given the Oklahoma Star of Valor for saving a pregnant stabbing victim’s life. The Edmond Sun (June 9) said Sgt. Kevin Painter, who is assigned to Headquarter Company 45th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, received the commendation for shielding his victim with his own body from a knife wielding attacker. According to the newspaper, Painter was on I-35 near the crossroads with I-40 March 15th when he saw the woman being attacked at the side of the road. Intervening immediately, he also treated the stab wounds on the woman’s hands and arms. The assailant, meanwhile, fled over a bridge and into the Oklahoma River. Despite the incident, the victim and the baby both survived their wounds. There is no word on whether any arrests have been made.
** A San Antonio, Texas man has been charged with murdering a former female combat medic. That is the word from KSAT (June 5) which said police arrested Zachary Earl Duncan Friday in relation to the death of Pilar Horton-Garcia, 33. Garcia’s body was found April 29th near some railroad tracks. She had been killed by a bullet to the head. According to the newspaper, Duncan allegedly admitted to at least 2 people that he had committed the crime to clear a debt. When asked about this by police, he demurred, saying only that he had been bragging but had not actually killed anyone. Despite his denial, however, he did fail a polygraph test. No other arrests have yet been made in the case.
