UNITED STATES NEWS
** The driver of a Virginia ambulance has been tagged with reckless driving after falling asleep at the
wheel Thursday, crashing his EMS unit. The Roanoke Times (Tiffany Stevens/October 1) said Ferrum
resident and First Call Ambulance Service employee Jonathan Douglas Jones was on I-81 in Salem
around 4:25 a.m. when he lost consciousness. According to the newspaper, he awakened as the EMS
unit veered to the left, over correcting and sending the vehicle into an embankment. EMT Jessica
Lynn Stump, 18, was thrown from the rig on impact. Patient Stephen Daniel Snider, 43, also suffered
injuries and was transported to hospital. Jones, however, was not injured.
FRANCE NEWS
** French paramedics were called to the Eurotunnel Calais terminal Saturday to treat staff members
injured by migrants attempting to breach the Chunnel. That is the word from The Express and Star
(October 3) which said the incursion, which occurred around 12:30 a.m., saw some 200 migrants
rush into the structure. According to the newspaper, after breaching security fences the group knocked
down Chunnel staff and pelted them with rocks. EMS treated 2 police officers as well as several
Eurotunnel employees. About 100 migrants were also arrested. Thirteen individuals have died this
year attempting to make their way into Britain via this route. On Wednesday, one person died
after being knocked down by a train at the entrance to the tunnel. A spokesman for the rail company
said Saturday’s incident appeared to be well organized and aimed more at media attention rather
than actual success in breaching the barrier.
