** Alberta’s Lakeland College partners with Australia on EMS degree program

** Lakeland College in Vermilion, Alberta is partnering with Australia’s Swinburne University of Technology to offer its Bachelor of Applied Business in Emergency Services degree down under. According to a press release put out by the college, the cohort, which will begin in February 2008, will see Aussie students in the same online classes as their Canadian counterparts. Study support and customer service issues for Australians will be handled by Swinburne. The latter will also seek to expand the program within the Pacific Rim. The degree program is intended for those with at least five years experience in emergency services. To date, students from the EMS, fire, health, military and disaster services industries have taken part. ** California paramedics in San Diego were recruited into action this past weekend, as wildfires engulfed homes and forced mass evacuations. The Canadian Press (October 22) said practitioners assisted in moving hundreds of residents from nursing homes and hospitals to safer locales. In total, some 250,000 area residents were asked to flee their homes. Some 16,000 hectares of land have already been burned by the blazes, with at least one person losing their life.
