** Former Michigan paramedic lauded for saving boy who fell through ice

UNITED STATES NEWS

** A former Detroit, Michigan paramedic is being credited with saving an 11-year-old Ann Arbor boy who fell through the ice Monday after playing near a pond around 4 p.m.. MichiganLive (February 25) said Michael Hood, who currently works as a wilderness survival instructor, happened upon the boy while walking in a city park with his dogs. Almost fully submerged, the child’s head was the only thing above the water. Hood said he jumped in to quickly retrieve the lad and then had his dogs cuddle him to raise his body heat. The fire department arrived a short time later. Although Hood said he didn’t blame the child’s parents for the 11-year-old’s predicament, he said more public education needs to be done on the dangers of playing around open water in winter.
