** Last surviving US World War I soldier/medic dies

** Colleagues baffled by South Carolina EMT colleague shot and killed by police after brandishing gun

** World War I’s last surviving soldier, medic Frank Buckles, died Sunday at the age of 110. Batangas Today (February 28) said Buckles, who served on France’s Western Front during the conflict, passed away peacefully at home in Charlestown, West Virginia. Originally born in Missouri, he was raised in Oklahoma, enlisting in the army at the age of 16 1/2. During the Second World War, he served three years in a civilian prisoner of war camp in the Philippines.

** A Havelock, South Carolina EMT, shot and killed by police February 17, was a well liked guy and valued employee. That is the word from WCTI 12 (February 21) which said the death of Austin Zundel, 27, has left colleagues baffled. Zundel was killed by law enforcement after he began waving his shotgun in a Swansboro neighborhood around 9 p.m. A former Marine who had served in Iraq, the firefighter had just earned his EMT and was studying to become a paramedic. With the investigation ongoing, funeral services were held last Wednesday.
