** UK paramedic struck off from practicing after attacking his wife in prolonged assault

** South Carolina paramedic fired for social media comments

UNITED KINGDOM NEWS

** A Stafford paramedic will no longer be able to practice EMS after the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) yanked his licence following a domestic assault conviction. The Express and Star (July 12) said Stuart Gwilt was handed the decision earlier this week. According to the newspaper, Gwilt was convicted last August for a June 5th prolonged attack on his wife which also included threatening to kill the family dog with a knife and killing himself. Gwilt apparently became enraged when his paramedic wife was away from home too long. His criminal conviction for common assault included a suspended sentence for 14 weeks imprisonment, as well as a 24-month rehabilitation requirement and a two year restraining order. He also had to pay 315 pounds costs. Pending the HCPC’s decision, he had been working as a patient flow manager.

UNITED STATES NEWS

** A South Carolina medic has been fired for posts he placed on social media online. That is the word from WLTX 19 (July 13) which said the unidentified provider was turfed alongside two firefighters. According to the news site, the substance of his posts has not been revealed. However, a statement from the City of Columbia hinted that the senior practitioner indicated he might not render patient care to certain individuals because of a bias. The firings mean four public servants have been terminated this week alone in the city because of social media comments.
