The accident took place near the eastern city of Hengelo, some 10 miles from the German border and just a few miles from Ambulance Oost headquarters. Colleagues from all over the country came to pay respects at the funeral. A German rescue helicopter, which transported Peter to the nearby traumacentre, paid respect by circling above the church and doing a fly-by. Peter was transported on his last journey in the very ambulance he was on when he was last on duty. The ambulance was driven by his colleague who was with him at the accident.
