** South African EMS union raises alarm over increasing violence against medics

SOUTH AFRICA NEWS

** The EMS union representing Cape Town ambulance responders is crying foul over recent violent attacks on medics, saying the Department of Health must do something now to resolve the problem. That is the word from The Times Live (TMG Digital/July 4) which said the plea from the Health and Other Service Personnel Trade Union of South Africa (HOSPERSA) comes after yet another incident in which 2 EMS providers were held at gunpoint. According to the newspaper, the Wednesday night attack in Philippi around 9:40 p.m. resulted in the medics having both their own belongings and medical equipment taken. An incident prior to Wednesday’s saw a police escort flee from protecting an EMS crew when bullets rang out. So far, there has been no comment from the Department of Health on the matter.
