** The daughter of an Ontario combat medic killed in Afghanistan ten years ago has been awarded a $4,000 scholarship to further her university studies. That is the word from The Daily Observer (Sean Chase/July 18) which said Katherine Arnold was given the grant by the Canada Company Scholarship Fund which aids the families of fallen soldiers. Arnold is the daughter of Cpl. Glen Arnold who served with 2 Field Ambulance, dying in Kandahar on September 18, 2006. Glen, who hailed originally from around Sudbury, served in the military for 14 years. His daughter said she would use the money towards studying for her degree in mechanical engineering. Katherine said someday she hopes to work in the aerospace industry.

** An off-duty Texas paramedic/firefighter is dead after drowning while swimming Saturday. NBC 5 (July 18) identified the medic as Grapevine Fire Department practitioner James McKenzie, 30. According to the news service, McKenzie and a friend were boating on Grapevine Lake when the duo attempted to swim ashore for a family gathering. McKenzie never surfaced after diving in. His body was recovered two hours later around 12:30 p.m. Colleagues said he was both a skilled medic and firefighter who also served on his department’s dive team. Funeral services are pending.
