** Saskatchewan train delays ambulance responding to emergency by 23 minutes;solutions sought
UNITED STATES NEWS
** A memorial service was held Saturday in Houston, Texas for a volunteer paramedic allegedly
killed by her former childhood friend turned boyfriend. ABC 13 (October 17) said the
commemoration for Cy-Fair practitioner Melissa Dawn Morden, 36, saw a standing room
only crowd gather to remember the compassionate woman found dead in her apartment
October 10th. According to the news site, Morden had taken in Troy Aaron Clay, 42, when
he fell on hard times, their relationship eventually evolving into a romance. Morden’s mother
said both were due at her place for dinner on the day she died. When she called Morden’s
apartment after the two didn’t show, Clay informed her that he had murdered Morden. Despite
being charged with murder, Clay remains a fugitive. The police have issued public alerts as to
his whereabouts via Crimestoppers.
CANADA NEWS
** Paramedics in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan are continuing to lobby for change after a train
held up an EMS crew responding to an emergency for 23 minutes Saturday. Global News
(David Giles/October 19) said the incident, which occurred as medics were responding to a
footballer with a potential neck injury, is apparently not unique. According to the news site,
the city council struck a committee earlier this year to work with the railway to attempt to
solve the problem. MD Ambulance spokesman Troy Davis applauded the move, saying the
problem will only get worse as trains get longer in length. He said any remedy to the issue
should consider a way to give EMS advanced notice as to where moving trains are in relation
to responding ambulances.
