** New York police officials in Sunset Park are investigating after a surveillance video surfaced
showing a paramedic pummeling a suspected phone thief. That is the word
from ABC 7 (AJ Ross/October 8) which said the footage was apparently taken on September 12th at
around 12:30 a.m. The paramedic had given chase when he saw the robber allegedly steal his cell
phone, GPS, and clothing from his vehicle. According to the newspaper, the medic used a phone
app to track him and eventually hailed police. Upon arrival at the man’s building, police placed the
hands of Daniel Shevchenko, 21, behind his back while attempting to arrest him. The video then
purportedly shows the paramedic attacking Shevchenko. Eyewitnesses said the practitioner, who
is with a private service, both punched and choked the man. Shevchenko was charged with grand
larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and resisting arrest.
No information is available on whether or not the paramedic or police officers involved in the
incident have either been disciplined or charged.
