** South Carolina man arrested after attacking EMTs attempting to aid him
UNITED STATES NEWS
** A pair of Jersey City, New Jersey EMTs facilitated a restaurant evacuation Sunday, after their CO2
monitors sounded as they entered a local Burger King. That is the word from The Jersey Journal (Caitlin
Mota/August 10) which said the noonish incident occurred just as the pair attempted to grab some lunch.
Following the alarms sounding, the duo had patrons leave the premises while they hailed the fire department.
The site was given the all clear shortly afterwards. The CO2 monitors have been part of full time medic
uniforms for the past 4 years. Area EMS volunteers will also be using them in the coming months.
** Two South Carolina EMTs required hospital treatment Sunday after a patient assaulted them around 4 p.m.
The Associated Press (August 10) said the Sumter County incident played out after EMS was hailed to a gas
station to treat an ill man. According to the news service, William Terrell Hutley, 25, attacked as soon as the
practitioners attempted to render aid. Once subdued, he was arrested. Hutley has been charged with first degree
assault and battery, assault and battery of higher and aggravated nature, and public disorderly conduct. He
remains in jail pending a bail hearing. Neither the motive for the attack, nor details on the injuries sustained
by the medics were made public.
